The kiln opened like a dream—glowing, whole, still warm with promise. Then slowly we zoom into the quiet truth.

Breakage is a part of life- it helps us remain detached and grounded, and respectful of the process- nothing is to be taken for granted.

Like life itself, clay owes us not a thing.
Even so, the cracks carry their own kind of beauty.

The clay starts to feel more like earth once texture finds its way in- layers, scratches, soft grooves like weathered stone or a dry riverbed.
I brush black iron oxide into the deeper parts. It settles there like metal in the ground, heavy and quiet.
And when the fire takes over, will it draw the colours into sharper contrast, or fold them gently into something new?

We usually fire pots here when it’s dry, but the monsoon had other plans.

This morning the sun came back, the air was warm and the water looked so inviting!
Seemed rude not to.

Today, they gave us a muddy little bath in the garden.

Our natural building experiments are paying off in the coolest way—literally. That coconut leaf roof? It’s keeping things a lot breezier in this summer heat. We laid it thick over a thin layer of bitumen, and are excited to see how it fares against the Goa monsoon.

Like any living thing, this building thrives with a little extra care—but in return, it gives us comfort, beauty, and connection. Grateful to be in tune with nature, one leaf at a time. 🌿✨

With quiet care, forest officials gently helped the hatchlings out of the sand and guided them toward the sea, using red torch filters so as not to confuse their natural instinct to follow the moonlight.

It’s a delicate moment—one that happens only if the timing’s right, and you happen to be walking the beach between March and June. Modern life has made it harder for these tiny creatures to find their way, but with a little help, they still make it home.

We were so moved by the experience, we came back to the studio and made a small piece inspired by it. Each little turtle felt like a living gem, carrying the ocean’s story on its back.

Keep your eyes open. Respect the beach at night. And if you see a red light—look closer, and tread gently.

As summer stretches longer and grows harsher, we’re finding playful and sustainable ways to stay cool. Vetiver, a deeply cooling herbal root, not only soothes the body but also calms the nervous system.

Many of us remember the earthy scent of vetiver from childhood, woven into the breeze of old-school desert coolers. With its rarity today, we decided to source the roots and craft something refreshing from scratch.

Just the other day, while melting under the sun in the garden, I soaked one of our woven vetiver experiments and placed it on my head—instant relief! Turns out, nature had the perfect solution all along.

Grateful for the food on our plates, the big and small moments of joy, and our little permaculture garden that reminds us of the simple pleasure of growing and giving back to the land 🌾✨

The studio is buzzing with excitement as we look forward to glazing our first stoneware batch with these colourful, yummy glazes. These were fired at cone 6 (1220 °C), and they’ve passed the sample test with flying colours - literally!

These pots were the result of our last pit-firing session, organised by our dear friend and fellow potter @prianka_sisodiya (who just so happens to be in Goa at the moment!). Her brilliant idea of using leftover wood from construction for a round of pit-firing brought such magic to the process.

Pit firing involves placing bisque-fired pots in a pit with combustible materials like wood, sawdust, or leaves, which create the characteristic smoke and ash patterns. The fire burns for 4-10 hours (or longer), and the cooling process can take an additional 12-24 hours. The longer the exposure to heat and smoke, the more defined the unique black markings and carbon patterns on the pots become.

We’re big fans of the matte black finish and the unique flame markings that make each piece one of a kind.

With winter finally settling in Goa, it’s almost time for another bonfire party - or as we like to call it, a pit-fire party - at the studio. Can’t wait to do it all over again! See you at the next round?

These hands-on workshops are aimed to introduce you to different aspects of permaculture thinking, where you can dip in for a single day of enrichment, or join the project on a recurrent basis to access a more extensive course.

Our vision for Māti extends far beyond what meets the eye. For us, it started with building a space that feels as connected to the earth as the crafts we create within it.

Our studio is built entirely using natural building techniques, with walls made from mud and bamboo. The ancient method of Wattle and Daub - (where a bamboo or wooden framework (the wattle) is covered with a mud mix (the daub) - was our foundation. Initially, the plan was to construct an opaque wall, sturdy and simple, which would completely block our view. But as the process unfolded, something unexpected happened.

We began noticing the way the horizontal lines of the bamboo framework mimicked the tree branches surrounding the studio. The texture, the thickness, and the interplay of light and shadow felt like nature was leaving its mark. That inspiration led us to leave deliberate negative spaces in the design, allowing the green of the outdoors to flow in and breathe life into the studio.

In the end, the design felt inevitable, as if the studio and its surroundings were always meant to be one 🍃✨

Glazing is like rolling a dice - sometimes you get exactly what you want, and sometimes, it's a happy surprise 🎲

Our most recent experiment was with this curdle blue glaze on terracotta, and the result on each product was unique! Some pieces turned out almost transparent, while others took on rich olive green or deep blue tones. The final outcome depended on glaze thickness, placement in the kiln, the clay body, and the technique we used.

After, trial, error, and a litttle bit of luck, our final pieces are ready!
